Wiring a Rv 125250v 30 Amp Standard Twist Power Easy Lock Inlet for Power Cord White

Topic: Non twist lock 30 amp inlet
Posted By: CCKitty on 10/24/14 07:15pm I want to upgrade to 30 amps in my old trailer. I ordered a 30 amp inlet which I didn't realize was a twist locking type. My adapters and my extension cord will not mate up with that. How do I go find a 30 amp inlet that is just prongs with not twist lock prong?
Posted By: hedge on 10/24/14 07:23pm hmm not sure I've ever seen one, i've only ever seen twist lock or an attached umbilical cord. Maybe just use the twistlock and convert your cord... or cut the end of the cord off and wire it direct.

Personally I prefer the twistlock(Marinco), I just converted mine from attached cable to twist lock.

Posted By: ScottG on 10/24/14 08:40pm I remember they used to exist. They were simply the male end instead of the female and looked just like a normal plug. They were black plastic and had a shiny metal spring loaded door.
I replaced one on an old TC I had 25 years ago. They were abandoned by the manufacturers many years ago but some NOS inventory existed for many years. They got rather expensive and I think they're nearly extinct now.
If I were you I would cut the end off the cord and just install a modern twist lock.
Posted By: pianotuna on 10/24/14 09:03pm Hi,

I would put on a short umbilical cord with a 30 amp male end. No need for the expense and scarcity of the twist lock.

You need to search by the NEMA number. There are several styles of 30AMP connectors depending on voltage and application. You most likely got a NEMA L14-30 30 Amp, 125/250V Twist Lock socket.

What you need is a NEMA TT-30R for the socket or a NEMA TT-30 for the plug. Do NOT use a NEMA 10-30, it is an old electrical specification that may cause damage to your RV or its appliances by not providing a proper ground. The NEMA 10-30 looks really similar, but one of the blades is "L" shaped.

Posted By: time2roll on 10/24/14 09:39pm Need the NEMA code from the inlet to verify correct and to match the connector needed.

Never seen a NEMA TT-30 inlet. You probably need to make an adapter or change the female end of your cord to the proper twist lock.

Posted By: wa8yxm on 10/25/14 06:42am Are your adapters TT-30 (Standard 30 amp RV plugs?) and your inlet a Marinco twist lock (Also standard for RV inlet use)

If so then do I have an easy solution for you

X-2 , You should be able to find those end almost anywhere, they're pretty common and standard on many RV's, as rvten said, you may want to try Lowes, Home Depot, as well as many RV dealers sell them.

Posted By: wa8yxm on 10/26/14 03:51am The plug yes,, However if he wants to use the Twist Lock inlet.. I posted links to that item.

Camping World has a cord about a foot long with the proper connectors.. Bit pricy but then Marinco Connectors are a bit pricy, they are also very good .

Posted By: CCKitty on 10/26/14 07:36am Thank you for all the helpful replies!

The inlet that I have is the 'Park Power 301ELRV 30 Amp 125V Standard RV Inlet' that is a twist lock and I have finally found (after 3 hardware and 1 RV stores) the female mate for it. I've got the 30 amp extension cord and will put that female end on it.

Then I need to look through my stuff and see what is the simplest way to adapt to 15 amp house current when I'm parked at home.

Again, thanks for the help.

Posted By: RoyB on 10/26/14 08:07am Be sure to follow the code where-as any cable that has VOLTAGE POTENTIAL on it must be a FEMALE CONNECTION so that when you plug the cable into a HOT VOLTAGE SOURCE with a MALE CONNECTION then the other end of the cable won't be able to touch any thing if energized.

The TWIST LOCK FEMALE SIDE INLET keeps you from accidentally pulling the connector out of the socket when energized. All trailers I have ever seen use them on the trailer side of the shore power cable.

If your RV30A to 15A adapters are the small round plug-in type you need to get rid of those and only use DOG-BONE type Adapters that are around 18-inches long. The small puck type will get hot on you over time and melt down your cable connectors making you have to replace them...

Posted By: wa8yxm on 10/26/14 10:38am Standard 30-15 dogbone adapter will work,,

The inlet you cite takes a standard Marinco plug if I'm not mistaken.

Posted By: time2roll on 10/26/14 10:45am Standard dog-bone is fine. Or get a second female connector and put it on a standard extension cord cut to the length you need. Extension should have #12 wire to connect at home. Even better is just put in a 30 amp RV outlet.
