The Royal College Art (RCA) is pleased to announce the launch of RCA T-Shirt Shop, a new annual enterprise to raise funds to support students to study at the RCA.

Collaborating with Hit and Run, a new company producing print-to-order, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) approved organic garments, RCA T-Shirt Shop presents t-shirts from over 40 designers including current RCA students, alumni including Andrew Bell, Colin Horgan, Chuting Lee, Frith Kerr and Kira Goodey, and friends of our MA Fashion programme including Pandemonia and E.J. Scott.

The collection also includes t-shirts from Zowie Broach, Head of Programme (MA Fashion) and Flora McLean, Senior Tutor (Footwear Accessories and Millinery) as well as designers Yvonne Gold and Benjamin Hall, both visiting lecturers at the RCA.

RCA T-Shirt Shop explores what t-shirt design means in today's unpredictable world and will raise funds to support students attending the RCA. For almost a century the printed t-shirt has been used as a means of communication; a political statement, a message of subculture allegiance or simply to tell everyone your new favourite band. The graphics were created by these talented artists exploring a vast array of today's concerns including gender identity, body image, racial issues and the concept of digital clothing.

T-shirts from RCA T-Shirt Shop are available from today (23 June) at www.hitandrun.ltd and all profits from the sales will be used to create bursary scholarships for students.

Zowie Broach, Head of Programme (Fashion MA), said:
'One of my  favourite T-shirts is now the size of a mouse – but a cool mouse T… for a fan of the New York Dolls.. bought on St Marks way way back in the day. I have many. Memories of times, people, & sounds .. Today to buy one of these T's is about supporting the scholarship of someone that will change their life, their time.'

Students Sven Steinmetz (MA Fashion), Victoria Petitjean (MA Textiles), Vivien Reinert (MA Textiles) and Zongbo Jiang (MA Fashion) discuss their designs:

Sven Steinmetz:
'This is a drawing. A letter I wrote to no one. I followed the rhythm of my handwriting that reveals just as much of me as the potential words I could have written. Schriftzeichnung is a German noun I have constructed meaning handwriting drawing. It does sound better in German than its English translation. By putting this A4 sheet on a T-shirt I let someone else carry my undefined story on their back'.

Victoria Petitjean:
'This artwork is a straight reference to protest posters and speaks about the state of despair I believe we all faced during the pandemic's multiple lockdowns. Gazing at the windows, trapped inside, but also inevitably caught up in intense thoughts. I called these 'flaming thoughts', causing eventually an inside blaze.'

Vivien Reinert:
'This one-line drawing is inspired by a cityscape compiled of hardware parts of computers. Instead of living in buildings anonymous and alone individuals reside and exist in the hardware parts of the computers. The connection between them is made and build through the cables and wires that move through the city. With this design I am asking "Is there any difference to our current cityscape?'

Zongbo Jiang:
'True/Fake looks into the concept of control with the information that is shared and presented to users on these platforms. Truth becomes lost with certain information only being shown to specific groups of people and the speed of fake news spreading faster than fact and how this has been used to manipulate people's decisions, specifically with elections.'

  1. Generally, the dress code business attire also called business formal or boardroom attire is the most formal thing you will encounter in a professional new shirt design office environment. Even if it's an unspoken dress code, it can often be required in traditional white-collar environments.
